Shoppers Beware! “Recession” is forcing Some Stores to Close

November 13, 2008 by Jennifer

I just recieved an email from a friend, Lolly who was nice enough to pass this tidbit on to us about Stores that are Closing soon due to the state of the economy. Here is the email:

It seems there are lots of stores that are closing due to the “recession” and the fact that people are not shopping. If you have any “gift cards” from these stores, make sure you use them, or you will lose them !

Watch those store money cards and gift cards.. and credit slips!

Stores that informed the Security Exchange of closing plans between October 2008 and January 2009.

Circuit City stores… most recent (? how many)

Ann Taylor- 117 stores nationwide are to be shuttered

Dillard’s to close some stores.

I did a little research on Snopes.com to validify the claim, and so far there is part truth to it at the time of the Snopes article. You can read the article here for more details.

While I know I am sad to see some of the shops I do go to, the up side will be the deep discounts/bargains for the Closing Out Deals! As long as Target & Walmart don’t close, I think I’ll be alright:)

Have any of you know of any stores/shops that are closing in your area?

After looking at the list and noticing my Movie Store on it (Movie Gallery) I called to confirm and the manager said not that they know of. Just thought that I would pass that info along.

Beware of all the things that you read from the media. Eddie Bauer may have closed some 27 stores, but what you don’t hear is that they have opened 22!! The closings may have been due to newer malls being opened down the road from the mall where a lease was up, an older store closing to be rebuilt into an updated set up. The quality and merchandise of Eddie Bauer has improved dramatically, their service is better than most places. I don’t see them going anywhere but up!

The news on Eddie Bauer is old. Yes Eddie Bauer did close 27 stores this year (2008). They are not planing to close any stores next year (2009). And every store that was closed was done so based on there location (High priced mall leases) or they were under preforming stores. The fact is Eddie Bauer did open 22 new stores this year (2008). I would also check their third quarter news and decide for yourself. Great products with great customer service.
