The Importance of Maintaining Your PC

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

PC_HelpWhile my article today is not exactly budget minded I did want to take the opportunity to remind you all of the importance of maintaining your personal computer. Normally I am pretty good about this but lately I have taken for granted the fact that my husband is very computer savvy and if something goes wrong I know where to turn.

Last week Friday after explaining to him that my browser was redirecting to other sites on occasion he recommended I run Spybot, a spyware and adware removal tool. I updated to the latest version before running it which is always key as these programs are always adding new files to search for and remove. It took hours (not an exaggeration by any means) to run the program and as 3AM drew near it was finally done. I removed all the items the program found and rebooted my computer. It was way past bedtime so I just left the computer on the login screen for in the morning.

When I restarted the computer in the morning when my desktop should have came up all I got was a black screen. I thought maybe a reboot would remedy the situation. The same thing happened again, it was time to put in a call to my husband and see what his thoughts were. He had me try a few things but to no avail, I could not get past the black screen.

Later that night when my husband had a chance he logged into the computer in safe mode to look at the files Spybot removed. There is when he spotted the nasty little booger that was causing all my troubles. He had heard of that particular spyware before and was aware that there was a fix.

The next day he ran the fix and a few other things that are probably above and beyond my understanding of computers. Finally I have my computer back up and running but I’ve learned an important lesson about maintaining my computer by taking the little bit of time it requires to run programs like Spybot on a regular basis.

Unfortunately I’m unsure where I got the spyware at or how long it had been on my pc so I can’t give you any words of advice of what to site(s) to avoid. However I can offer you my story as an example of the importance of taking those few minutes that it takes to update and start these programs, heck many of them now days have an auto-schedule feature!

Good Deals Found While Perimeter Perusing

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Target GCLast night while I was perimeter perusing at Target I came across some great deals that I’d like to give you a heads up on. The below deals are each a best scenario situation and may rely on you having a particular coupon. Obviously each scenario is YMMV (your mileage may vary) based upon how your local Target handles stacking manufacturer coupons and Target coupons as well as if they enforce a coupon limit. I’ve provided a more detailed breakdown to each of my deal finds in the Target forum on my website in case you’d like additional information so that you may take advantage of these great deals too.

100 Calorie Oreo Cakesters = $1.93 (TPC)
-$1/1 Nabisco 100 Calorie Packs, 4-oz. or larger
-$1/2 100 Calorie Oreo Mini Cakesters (MFC IP)
OOP = $.86 for 2 boxes

Easy Mac Cups = $.89
-$1/2 Kraft Easy Mac meals
-B2G1 Free Easy Mac Cups (MFC Tearpad)
OOP = $.56 WYB 6

Mac & Cheese 8oz Snack Crackers = $1.02 (TPC)
-$1/1 Nabisco snack, 7.5-oz. or larger
OOP = $.02 per box

Planters 6oz Trail Mix = $1.99
-$1/1 Planters Nuts
-$1/2 4oz or + Planters Trail Mix, Daybreak Blend or Cluster packages (MFC Tearpad)
OOP = $.98 for 2 bags

Finally I’ll leave you with details on how I did the Special K deal for a final cost of $.17 plus tax.

My Super Target had manufacturer peelies on the Kellogg’s Rite Bites and Special K Bars for a Free 6ct Box of Special K Crackers WYB either the bars or the snacks. So I combined two peelies with a Kellogg’s coupon I had from off the back of a box of Special K cereal for this awesome deal.

2 Special K Bars ($2.39ea) = $4.78
2 Special K Crackers ($2.39ea) = $4.78
1 Special K Cereal = $2.39

Total = $11.95

Less Coupons

2 Free Special K Crackers WYB bars or snacks ($4.78)
$2 off Special K Cereal WYB Special K Bars

Subtotal = $5.17 OOP + Tax & Receive a $5 Target GC

How Coupons Impact Pets

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Pet SuppliesOne thing that I’ve noticed since I begun couponing is how much we have saved on pet food. Not just food but treats, supplies and I even won a rebate for vet care awhile back. Our beagle, Sparky, has a nice stockpile of food and quite the variety of treats that I have begun for a fraction of the cost by pairing coupons with sales.

I’m sure you have noticed the pet coupons in the Sunday inserts, on the product packaging and sometimes even inside the product. Of course not all of these coupons are great but every now and then one will come along that you will want to take advantage of using.

 For instance some of you may recall the $5 Iams coupon from a few months ago that worked out for free dog and cat food at Walmart. Sometimes all it takes to begin a stockpile for your pet(s) is a great coupon to pair with a sale.

Obviously if you do decide to create a stockpile for your furry family member(s) you need to take a few things into consideration. For starters the product shelf life is important and how much your pet(s) can use. You don’t want to stock so much of a product that you will not be able to use it prior to its expiration date.

However if you do acquire too much there are plenty of shelters and rescues that would be more than appreciative of a generous donation of supplies.

Another thing to consider is the amount of space the products will take up and where you will store them.

When I find these great deals on dog food or treats that I want to stockpile I call upon my fellow couponers for help. I have found that I can get more of the coupons I want by mere trades then going out and buying extra papers. I have paired up with a few local couponers and I trade my coupons for cat products for coupons good on dog products. It’s a simple exchange that we make of coupons that we know we have no use for the products they are valid on.

All you need to do is find a buddy or two and figure out what coupons you have no need for that they do. Starting an exchange like this is a great way to share your passion for saving money and could even lead to heads up on deals in the future!

Pondering My Organization Efforts

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Girl ThinkingTonight (this morning really as it’s almost 3am) I sit here and wonder if I’m taking an effective approach to organizing my coupons. Why am I pondering this at 3am on a Friday night? Isn’t it obvious? We have Kmart Super Doubles & Triples starting this Sunday in my area.

When I first started to coupon in December of 2007 I used an accordion style coupon holder. Quickly I outgrew that but I held on to it and left my grocery coupons in it and moved the rest to a binder. Being able to flip through my binder and see the coupons works well for me however I don’t put enough time into clipping, sorting and filing my coupons as I should.

In addition to not taking time to clip multiple inserts I dumpster dive for coupons when I have time. While it is a great way to get extra inserts many times they come torn, tattered and incomplete. Unfortunately I don’t have the time (or try to make time) to cut all the inserts I acquire. So not too long ago I picked up three file folder envelopes with seven dividers in each to put whole inserts in. Adding this system and filing the inserts by the date has worked great as I can just file the whole inserts and cut out the incomplete ones.

There is a downfall to the ease of the filing system. Too often when I am shopping I find items that are not on my list that I know I have coupons for but I do not have them with me. This leads to missing out on a great deal or making a return trip after I clip the necessary coupons.

So here I still sit pondering (this is the beginning of day 3 of pondering) how on Earth I will get my coupons in order in time for Kmart Super Doubles & Triples on Sunday. Anyone have any suggestions shy of a major coupon cutting/sorting/filing party?

How do you keep your coupons organized? Am I missing out on a well known secret that could keep me organized? I did try; one of my New Years Resolutions was to keep my coupons organized. I feel like I’ve failed because my continued efforts to stay organized and reduce my coupon clutter are not working as I had hoped.

Review and Giveaway: Rubbermaid Food Storage Products

rubbermaid container

For the last month I’ve been trying out some wonderful products for the kitchen from Rubbermaid. The three food storage products that I have been using include a variety of sizes of Easy Find Lids, Premier and Produce Saver containers. My family has been able to put each and every container to the test and I must say I am very pleased with our experience.

We used to be that family with the stack of lids in the cabinet and no matter how hard you tried you could never find the right sized lid to fit the container you just filled. Well those days are over at my house thanks to the Easy Find Lids containers. The lids snap to the bottom of the container base so there is no need to play the search and hope it fits game. In addition to the lids snapping to the bottom of the container the lids also fit multiple bases and the graduated container sizes make it easy to stack and store. This has been a wonderful feature for our house as we have exceeded the space available in many of our cabinets. The containers also nest nicely on top of one another for stacking inside the refrigerator and or freezer to save even more space in your kitchen.

I also tried the Rubbermaid Produce Saver which uses the Easy Find Lids system to keep the lids and trays organized. The Produce Saver comes with a crisp tray to separate the moisture from your produce and a fresh vent to allow fruits and vegetables to breathe. These two features help to keep your produce fresh and crisp up to 33% longer than a traditional food container. These containers also come in graduated sizes and offer green colored tops and trays so they are easily distinguishable from the red Easy Find Lids. I found that the Produce Saver container came in handy for those bagged salads that can not be resealed.

Earn & Learn With Free Samples

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Free SampleMonetizing your website or blog can be very rewarding but it doesn’t come easy. However there are some companies that have gone above and beyond the call of duty to try and simplify the process. The latest opportunity I have run across is using Ready Site a partnership that I became aware of in a special announcement from Logical Media.

Ready Site is easy to use and the best feature of all is that it updates daily by itself. If you feel that your readers would be interested in free offers like product samples (who doesn’t love a free sample to learn about and try a new product) then this is for you.

After you have been approved it is very simple to create your customized page or banner to place on your website, blog or social networking site.  Ready Site manages the campaigns so there is no need to keep up with emails regarding expired campaigns or changes in current offers.

Basically once you have created your page or banner and added the html code to your site you can forget about it. Your work is done, sit back watch your stats and wait to get paid. Right now Ready Site is offering $25 for new signups so if you feel this is something you would be interested in right now is the perfect time to get started.

Just to recap how easy it is to use Ready Site.

  1. Sign up and wait to be approved.
  2. Customize your page or banner and place the code on your website/blog/social network site.
  3. Watch your stats and wait to be paid.

The longest step in this process for me was getting approved. Customization took literally 5 or 10 minutes and the banner I designed fits perfectly in my sidebar and matches my site design. Once I placed the code on my site the ads were there immediately and I have already noticed them changing on their own. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to sign up and use Ready Site.

Creating Easter Traditions

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Easter Bunny CakeWith Easter approaching rapidly (April 12th) have you considered what you can do to make this Easter memorable for your children or grandchildren? As a child Easter, Halloween and Christmas were my favorite holidays. My Grandma used to make each Easter a unique treat for us kids by creating personalized baskets overflowing with goodies from none other than the Easter Bunny and the most delicious looking bunny cake I ever laid eyes on. Unfortunately my Grandma is no longer with us so it is up to each of us grand kids to carry out and create new Easter traditions to share with our own families.

I have done some brain storming and research online to find ways that I can create a new unique Easter tradition with my children. Check out these new spins on some traditional Easter activities.

A unique take on dying Easter Eggs can be found here. From creating a marbleized look to adding pressed flowers to your eggs this list provides detailed directions from beginning to end.

How about an Easter themed game or relay race to keep the children entertained? Check out the list of games and relays that Kaboose has compiled here. List comes complete with instructions for play as well as supplies needed so you can be sure your Easter activities go off without a hitch.

After dying eggs and playing games you surely will have worked up an appetite. So why not bake and decorate a cake? This adorable furry friend comes straight from the Betty Crocker Kitchen and looks too good to eat. Don’t be fooled though as this is a simple recipe (yes, it’s a box cake) with easy decorating instructions to complete the look of a bunny hiding in the grass.

Creating an Easter tradition for your family does not have to be complicated or expensive it just needs to be centered on spending quality time with your loved ones. I honestly believe this is how my Grandma made Easter such a memorable time when I was a child. I think she had just as much fun creating a tradition as us kids had devouring her hard work.

Do You Believe In Coupon Fairies?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

FairyI recently wrote an article for my blog about an experience I had when I found some high dollar coupons sitting on a shelf at Target. I’d like to share the story I wrote with the readers here at Sisterly Savings with hope that it will encourage more coupon clippers to become coupon fairies. I played coupon fairy last night and left some great soon to expire coupons for an unsuspecting shopper to grab and use. What a wonderful feeling, if only I could be there when they discover and use the coupons.

Ever been out shopping and find a coupon sitting on the shelf? Who puts those stray coupons along side the products they are for at the store? I like to think a “coupon fairy” does. Last night a wonderful “coupon fairy” left me a surprise in the cleaning product isle at Target.

I found three $5 Huggies and one $1 Life Cereal coupon just sitting on the shelf. First I asked the other lady in the isle if she happened to sit them down but they weren’t hers so I was happy to quickly scoop them up and put them to good use. The first thing I checked since they were printable coupons is that they each had a unique number to ensure they were not photo copies. Each was unique and three of the four were printed in color. I put the three coupons that were in color to use before leaving the store by purchasing two refill packages of Huggies Gentle Care wipes and 1 box of Life Maple & Brown Sugar cereal. I then grabbed four boxes of Quaker granola bars which I had $1/2 coupons for in my holder so that I could complete the gift card offer.

Anyways I just wanted to share my story about the very generous “coupon fairy” and encourage others to leave a comment sharing their stories or better yet take time to be a “coupon fairy” for someone else.

You never know you may really surprise someone and make their day, I know this “coupon fairy” made my night!

Double Dip with Upromise eCoupons

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

StandardIf you haven’t heard already Upromise.com offers clipless coupons that can be linked to the grocery and drugstore cards associated with your account. Every month the rewards change and Upromise offers up to $25 in eCoupons. These coupons are different than the coupons you generally use in that they are clipless and instead of the savings coming off your total at the register the amount is added to your Upromise account. So this means that you can double dip when you make a qualified purchase by using the same manufacturer coupon that you normally would in addition to an eCoupon.

It’s very easy to use the eCoupons, all you have to do is log into your account, select the coupons you want and then activate them. Since these coupons are valid for the entire month, to save time and make sure you receive the maximum savings you are entitled to, I suggest selecting and activating all of the eCoupons. This way if you buy something that there is an eCoupon for you are guaranteed to receive credit in your account for the purchase.

Using Upromise.com is a great way to save for your child’s future or even pay for your own schooling so if you are not already a member I highly recommend you register today. To learn more about Upromise eCoupons you can view this flash video and when you are done don’t forget to activate this months offers then tell any friends and family who contribute to your savings to do the same!

Are You Doing the ChaCha?

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

PhotobucketNo, I’m not talking about ballroom dancing. I’m talking about text messaging ChaCha (242242) or calling 800-2ChaCha the human-powered search and answer service. ChaCha is a free service where live people answer your questions 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I bet your wondering why you would need to use a service like this. Let me give you an example.

Say you want to know the hours a restaurant is open but you don’t know the number to call and ask and you don’t have access to the internet. If you text ChaCha and ask them a question like: “What are the hours for (restaurant name) in (city & state)?”, a guide will then search for the answer to your question and reply with the answer. When submitting a geo-specific question to ChaCha you should include key identifiers like the city and state name or zip code. If it is a large city with multiple locations you may want to include the cross streets to help the guide provide you with the information your are seeking.

You can text ChaCha a question about almost anything. Just give them a try, I bet you are not the first to ask that type of question. Keep in mind though that their Terms of Service do restrict some adult-oriented questions.

If you’re bored ask ChaCha to tell you a joke, send you trivia, a quote or even a fortune. Honestly the guides have been asked a plethora of questions from one end of the spectrum to the other. Trust me, I know as I am a guide for ChaCha.

I call being a guide for ChaCha my work at home job that I only have to do if I want to. Seriously, I’m not lying one bit. I log in and perform searches only if and when I want to. I get paid per search performed, which means that I can log in for as little or as long as I want. I can stop and come back as I am able, think of it like being your own boss and you decide if and when you’ll work. While I won’t get rich being a guide it does help me feel like I am contributing to my family and it is a great way for a Stay-at-Home Mom to help supplement her families income. ChaCha is currently accepting applications for new guides and if you are interested in learning more about becoming a guide feel free to email me. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have as well as invite you to join my team by being your referral. I have many helpful tips of the trade that I am more than happy to share with members of my team.

So now that you know that you have the power to ask someone practically anything at the tips of your thumbs are you going to get out there and do the ChaCha?

{Back in October,2008, we first introduced you to Cha Cha as a means for earning some extra cash. In January of 2009, I received a quick email from reader Karen about Cha Cha:

“Just wanted to say thanks for your info on “ChaCha” awhile back……I joined them and in Nov and Dec I made $600 for maybe 10 hrs/ week. It’s working out excellent for me!!”

Now that they are once again accepting applications, now is the time to sign up before they close the offer again!!}

Enjoy Spring Break On A Budget

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Spring Break is in full swing here and I’m already looking for ideas to keep my oldest children content. I’m sure many other parents are trying to do the same without breaking the bank. So I’ve compiled a list of family oriented activities that won’t keep you reaching into your purse or wallet.

1.) If the weather is nice plan an afternoon outside at the local park. Enjoy a picnic lunch and don’t forget the camera to capture those memorable moments.

2.) Spend some time in the kitchen and give the kids a hands on experience. Make something that is easy for the kids to help with like no bake cookies or sugar cookies that can later be cut out with cookie cutters and decorated.

3.) Do a craft project. Easter is right around the corner so this may be a great time to get a jump start on making some homemade Easter decor. There are lots of Spring craft project instructions online from pinwheels to pasta murals. I would definitely recommend checking out Family Fun website as they offer a nice variety of crafts on their website.

4.) Attend a St. Patrick’s Day Parade or event. Today there will be lots of fun activities going on and many of them are FREE! Check your local newspaper for locations and times.

5.) Rent a movie from the library or see if there are any current free movie codes that you can use at a nearby Redbox location. Use InsideRedbox.com to search for current Redbox codes.

These are just a few of the many ways that you can keep your children entertained on a budget during Spring Break. What other tips do you have for keeping the kids active during Spring Break without breaking the bank?

Get Swag With Swag Bucks

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Are you using Swagbucks.com to be rewarded with the hot digital currency called “Swag Bucks”? If you’ve always wanted to be swagged then now is a great time to join and start accumulating bucks to redeem for prizes. There are numerous ways to earn Swag currency including searching the internet (I recommend using the SB toolbar), recycling your old electronics, shopping online, commenting on the Swag Bucks Blog, referring your friends, interacting with The Swag Guy on Facebook, submitting polls, finding codes and more! Earning Swag Bucks is easy and they accumulate rather quickly.

I redeem my Swag Bucks for Amazon.com gift certificates because you never know when the next hot deal will roll around on Amazon! Besides Amazon.com offers a constant flow of hot deals and who can honestly say they can not find something to purchase there? All it takes to earn a $5 Amazon gift card is 45 Swag Bucks, they accrue so quickly that in no time (seriously a week, maybe two) you can earn your first gift card. The Swag Store has recently gone digital so it won’t be long after you cash in your credits that you can go to your “My Account” page then view the “My Gift Cards” tab and snag that new Amazon.com e-Gift Card. Then head over to Amazon.com login to your account, click on the “Apply a Gift Certificate/Card to You Account” link under “My Account”. This will apply the $5 to your Amazon.com account and you can use it on a future purchase. Pretty easy huh? Almost as easy as earning and redeeming  SwagBucks.

For those of you who are not Amazon shoppers don’t worry because The Swag Guy has an awesome stash of prizes stored in the Swag Vault from vintage collectibles to the latest technology. Truly there is something for everyone at Swagbucks.com. If you are not already a member hurry over and sign up because you never know when The Swag Guy will release his next clue to find a code worth a buck or two. I hope all of you enjoy using Swag Bucks as much as I have and I can’t wait to hear about what kind of prizes you redeem!
